Gareth Thomas is set to become a dual-code international after winning a call-up to the Wales rugby league squad.

Thomas, 36, won 100 caps for Wales in the 15-man-code before making the switch to Super League with the Crusaders in March and has now been confirmed in a 48-man Wales training squad for the forthcoming European Cup.

Thomas won the last of his union caps in Wales' loss to Fiji at the 2007 Rugby World Cup but is now hoping to play his part against France, Scotland and Ireland this October as Wales look to defend their title.

The European Cup winners will this season gain entry to next year's Four Nations, where they will meet league superpowers Australia, England and New Zealand.

"It is a great feeling," Thomas said. "When I came here, my focus was purely on playing for the Crusaders and being part of the successful set-up here. It almost feels like I'm playing for Wales when I play for Crusaders, being the only Welsh franchise in Super League.

"As the season went on and the more I got involved in the game, I knew I would love to represent my country again. To be able to represent Wales in a different sport, in such a short space of time, is a massive, massive honour and achievement for me.

"No one likes representing their country more than me. For me to hopefully say I've represented Wales in both codes is a great honour for me and my family and is one of the highlights of my rugby career."
