2003
In their key World Cup pool match England beat South Africa 25-6 in Perth. Will Greenwood scored the only try of the match and Jonny Wilkinson kicked 20 points for the winners. Louis Koen scored the only points for South Africa, who did not plumb the depths of their 2002 53-3 drubbing at Twickenham and contributed to a fiercely contested showdown. Koen missed four attempts at goal to allow England some breathing space and had a clearance charged down by Lewis Moody, allowing Greenwood to register an opportunist score.

1978
England's World Cup-winning centre Mike Tindall was born in Otley. He scored a try on his England debut against Ireland in the opening game of the 2000 Six Nations after graduating in to the Bath first-team. After playing in all but one of England's games at the 2003 World Cup he started the final alongside Will Greenwood in the centre and helped them to victory. Post-World Cup his career has been blighted by injury, with a broken leg ruling him out of England's World Cup defence in 2007. In 2005 he joined Gloucester.

1999
Spain were classified as the last-placed team at the 1999 Rugby World Cup but their coach Alfonso Feijoo believed they justified their right to take part. The organisers ranked the teams who failed to make the knock out stages, from in Canada 12th down to the Spanish in last place, but Feijoo believed it has been a rewarding experience for his players. "It is vital for small rugby playing countries like ours to increase our experience, and to do that we must participate,'' he said before his squad left for home.

1906
The Glamorgan selectors invited Gwyn Nicholls, who announced his retirement earlier in the year, to return and lead the county in their forthcoming match with the first Springboks. Nicholls, on this occasion, graciously turned down the invite.

1951
Basil Kenyon, captain of the Springboks, sustained an eye injury in the tourists' match at Pontypool that brought to an end his promising rugby career. Kenyon only played a single Test match, an 11-8 win over New Zealand at the Crusader's Ground in Port Elizabeth.

1988
Argentina were without their inspirational captain Hugo Porta for an eight-match tour of France that began inauspiciously with an 18-15 defeat by a French Selection at Dijon.

1997
Matt Dawson, in the unlikely role of place-kicker, steered Northampton to a decisive 25-6 League victory over old Midlands rivals Leicester at Franklin's Gardens.

1997
Newcastle, on their way to winning the League title, beat Sale to maintain their 100% record. Rob Andrew fired the champions-in-waiting with three penalties and a couple of conversions.
