Winger David Campese and fullback Andrew Leeds touched down for Australia, with fly-half Michael Lynagh adding 14 points with the boot. New Zealand's only points came courtesy of fullback Kieran Crowley, who landed three penalties.
The All Blacks recovered well from the setback, though, and went on to win the World Cup the following year, beating France, Australia's conquerors, in the final.
