Springboks begin a troubled tour

1981
The Springboks opened a troubled tour of New Zealand with a 24-6 win against Poverty Bay in Gisborne. The Springboks were dogged by anti-Apartheid protestors during their stay, the protests culminating in a tour match at Rugby Park in Waikato being called off.
1899
The Lions squared their series in Australia, winning the second Test 11-0 in the first international match ever staged in Brisbane. The Lions scored tries through Charlie Adamson, Gwyn Nicholls and Alan Smith in front of 15,000 fans at the Exhibition Ground.
1975
Ireland's most-capped flanker, Simon Easterby, was born in Harrogate. Easterby won 65 caps for Ireland between 2000 and 2008 after making his international debut against Scotland at Lansdown Road during the first Six Nations tournament.
In 2005 Easterby won two Test caps for the British & Irish Lions in New Zealand, and announced in 2009 that he would be taking up a coaching role with his long-time club Scarlets.
1986
South Africa openside Heinrich Brussow was born in Bloemfontein. A combative presence on the floor, Brussow made his international debut against England at Twickenham in November 2008.
After a superb Super 14 for the Cheetahs in 2009, may tipped Brussow to shine against the touring British & Irish Lions, but he missed selection for the Springbok squad. After an impressive showing against the Lions in the colours of the Cheetahs however he was selected as Schalk Burger's injury replacement - winning three caps during the series.
1933
Australia squared the series with South Africa with a thumping 21-6 Test win in Durban. Ron Biilmann lands three conversions and a penalty in the Wallabies' four tries to one success.
1950
In one of their best tour performances Karl Mullen's Lions demolished Auckland 32-9, Lewis Jones contributing 17 points.
1959
The Lions bounced back from their weekend Test disappointment, beating West Coast/Buller 58-3. English wings Peter Jackson and John Young each score four tries for the visitors.
1961
The first French Test on New Zealand soil ends in a 13-6 win for the All Blacks at Eden Park, Auckland. Winger Donald McKay and centre Terence O'Sullivan crossed for tries in front of a crowd of 60,000.
