Ciaran Fitzgerald is a former captain of Ireland and the British and Irish Lions and he led his country to the Five Nations Championship as well as leading the Lions tour to New Zealand in 1983. He was an excellent boxer and hurling player as a youngster but rightly chose rugby as he went on to make his debut against Australia in 1979 as Ireland won 27-12 in Brisbane.
Fitzgerald led the Irish to the Triple Crown in 1982 and 1985 as well the Five Nations Championship victory in 1983. That year he had the honour of leading the Lions against the All Blacks but the tour was ultimately a forgettable one for Fitzgerald and his fellow tourists as they were 'blackwashed' 4-0. The Lions threw away a 9-0 lead at half-time in the second Test and they were made to pay as they suffered their biggest series loss to New Zealand.
Fitzgerald carried on playing for Ireland and made his final appearance in the green jersey in the 1986 Five Nations Championships as his side lost narrowly 10-9 to Scotland at Lansdowne Road. Fitzgerald was in the Irish Army and maintained a career in the Armed Forces away from rugby. After he finished playing rugby he became a pundit on television.
