Thompson's first taste of senior international rugby was as fullback in the Scotland team who beat Ireland in the club international at Meggetland in March 2007. The following season he added to international honours with selection in the Scotland 7s squad and emerged as one of the team's star players on the IRB World Sevens circuit.
In June 2009, Thompson was an ever present for Scotland 'A' at fullback during the victorious IRB Nations Cup campaign in Bucharest; scoring two tries against Russia. In the following game against Uruguay, he featured alongside his cousin, scrum-half Rory Lawson for the first time ever.
The polished fullback, who can also operate on the wing or in midfield, had made his first team debut for Edinburgh in 2007 having graduated from the national academy. A composed fullback, he has since been a competent understudy to both Chris Paterson and Hugo Southwell for the No.15 jersey.
His family tree is filled with famous names, Thompson is a grandson of "Voice of Rugby" commentator Bill McLaren, son of TV racing presenter Derek Thompson, and nephew of Scotland scrum-half Alan Lawson.
