Profile

All Blacks scrum-half Laidlaw won 20 caps for New Zealand between 1964 and 1970 - captaining them once against Australia in 1968 - and was equally accomplished off the field.

A Rhodes scholar, he was one of the first New Zealanders to play extensively overseas and captained Oxford University to a win over the 1969-70 Springboks in Britain and also spent a period in France.

After the 1970 tour of South Africa, and aged just 27, he drifted away from game in New Zealand. But he returned to cause controversy in 1973 with the publication of his book, Mud in Your Eye that offered a sardonic view of the state of the New Zealand game.

He later became a diplomat and High Commissioner to Zimbabwe, served the Commonwealth secreteriat and became the country's Race Relations Conciliater. He also went on to serve as a member of the New Zealand Parliament for Wellington and in local government. He is also a well-known media commentator with authoritative views not only on rugby but also politics, the arts and international and current affairs.
