A powerful wing, Stapleton played 16 Tests for the Wallabies between 1951 and 1958. A servant of New South Wales and the St.George club, he played 236 games in Sydney club rugby and scored 144 tries. While not exceptionally quick he possessed strong try-scoring instincts and a great deal of determination. In 1960 Stapleton added a remarkable post-script to his career, becoming an All Black. While his eligibility as a genuine All Black has been questioned, Stapleton did indeed wear the black jersey during a tour match. The New Zealand side were light two players for a stop-over game against Queensland, with Stapleton and New South Wales' Maurice Graham stepping in. Stapleton scored the opening try in a big win.
