A former Welsh athlete, Tom James turned to rugby as a winger with Merthyr RFC in 2003 before joining Cardiff RFC and progressing to play for the Blues. It was a move that has worked well for James who has gone on to play for his country.
His rapid progression saw him join the Wales Sevens team in 2006-07 and he earned a place in Gareth Jenkins' Wales squad for their summer tour at the end of that season. He failed to win a cap, and although he was in the 40 man provisional squad in the build up to the 2007 World Cup, making his debut in the 62-5 warm up defeat to England at Twickenham, he did not make the final cut.
James went on to be the top try scorer in the 2007-08 Magners League, and in 2008-09 scored tries in the final of the Anglo-Welsh Cup and the Heineken Cup semi-final defeat to Leicester Tigers after which he missed a penalty in the infamous shootout.
