Profile

Martin Corry has enjoyed a career at the top of the English game since making his debut for Leicester Tigers in 1997. He made the step up to international rugby later that year, running out for England against Argentina in Buenos Aires.

Corry has won five Premiership titles, two Heineken Cups and the Anglo-Welsh Cup during a hugely successful club career. At international level, Corry was part of the England squad that won the Rugby World Cup in 2003 and enjoyed a stint as England captain following the retirements of Martin Johnson and Lawrence Dallaglio.

Corry's time as England skipper was a difficult period for both the player and the national side, with vehement criticism reserved for England's slide into mediocrity post-2003. Corry, always a willing and able servant to England, bore a great deal of the strain as skipper and his tenure reached a low point during the 2006 autumn internationals as England lost to New Zealand, South Africa and, most damagingly, Argentina.

England coach Andy Robinson was replaced by Brian Ashton following the series, and although Corry was reatined in the England squad for the 2007 Six Nations he too was replaced by Phil Vickery as captain.

He made his second Rugby World Cup final in 2007, having led the side during the group stages, although this time England came in second behind South Africa and Corry retired from international rugby. He continued to captain Leicester in the Premiership, more commonly from the second-row, but in May 2009 he announced he would retire at the end of the season.

Corry possesses seven Test caps for the British and Irish Lions, touring Australia in 2001 and New Zealand in 2005, also winning a cap in the warm-up Test against Argentina at the Millennium Stadium in 2005.
