All Blacks fly-half Dan Carter has been handed a one-week ban for a dangerous high tackle on Wales scrum-half Martin Roberts.

Carter will miss New Zealand's appointment with Italy at the San Siro in Milan on Saturday, a game he was widely expected to be rested for in any eventuality. Bay of Plenty pivot Mike Delany is set to make his debut in place of Carter at a sold-out ground.

Carter's infringement came in the closing minutes of the All Blacks' 19-12 victory over Wales at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday, although it went unpunished by the referee.

Wales boss Warren Gatland believed that Carter should have seen a yellow card for the tackle however, a belief backed-up by the decision delivered by IRB judicial officer Jeff Blackett during a hearing at Heathrow Airport.

Carter became the third All Black to be suspended on the current tour, after winger Sitiveni Sivivatu (dangerous tackle) and prop Tony Woodcock (striking) got one-match bans after the Tokyo test against the Wallabies.
