Gordon Tietjens has agreed to coach New Zealand Sevens at the Olympic Games in 2016.

The 57-year-old, a winner of four Commonwealth Games golds during his time as New Zealand coach, has agreed a new four-year contract extension with the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU).

Since taking the reins in 1994, Tietjens has turned his side into the world's most-successful Sevens outfit, dominating the IRB Sevens World Series since its inception and racking up nine titles.

"I still have the same passion and enjoyment for the game of Sevens that I had when I began coaching and I am incredibly proud of the role Sevens has played in the development of rugby players in New Zealand," he said.

"Taking home four Commonwealth Games gold medals has given me some of the most memorable moments of my coaching career.  Taking part in the Olympic Games will be the pinnacle of my career and something that all coaches and athletes aspire to."
