Bowden's assured reading of the game at both 10 and 12 made him an attractive prospect in New Zealand, with both the Highlanders and Crusaders making use of him during a short Super Rugby career. A former New Zealand international at Under-21 level, he made the move to London Irish at the end of the 2010 Super 14 season, providing cover in midfield following the retirement of England legend Mike Catt. At provincial level in New Zealand he switched between Northland, Otago and Auckland before agreeing his move to England.
