The Australian-born coach was appointed as the All Blacks defence coach in December 2011, linking up with Ian Foster and Steve Hansen in the new-look New Zealand coaching set-up.

McLean had previously spent most of his coaching career in New Zealand, including stints with Wellington and the Hurricanes.
