Former Sale Sharks, England Under 21s and England Saxons Head Coach Jim Mallinder took charge of newly relegated Northampton Saints in June 2007. In his first season at the helm, Mallinder led the Saints straight back to the Guinness Premiership with an undefeated "perfect" season.
Prior to joining Northampton, Mallinder was a fullback at Sale Sharks, where he stayed for 15 years as a player and a coach. And in his first season in charge, he took the Sharks from 11th to 2nd in the Premiership and secured their first Heineken Cup qualification in doing so. More success followed as he led Sale to the Parker Pen Shield, now the European Challenge Cup, for their first silverware in 2002.
Mallinder left Sale to take up a post in the RFU's National Academy in 2004 and working with Brian Ashton and Dorian West, he masterminded the England Under 21s into winning the Under 21s' version of the 2006 Six Nations with a clean sweep of six wins out of six. He was subsequently handed the reins of the England Saxons, where he had an impressive record of 15 wins from 16 matches including victory in the Churchill Cup final against the New Zealand Maori at Twickenham.
One of Mallinder's most notable achievements in his Northampton tenure was to win the European Challenge Cup and qualify for the 2009-10 Heineken Cup. He has turned Franklins Gardens into a "Fortress" as shown through their home win over Munster in the 2009-10 season.
And after progressing in the Premiership during the 2009-10 campaign, they secured their spot in the 2010-11 Heineken Cup. After topping a group which consisted of Castres, Edinburgh and Cardiff, Mallinder led Northampton into the tournament quarter-finals. They met Ulster and overcame them before beating Perpignan in the semi-finals to tee up a final with Leinster at the Millennium Stadium. Despite holding a commanding lead, the Saints eventually fell 33-22 to the Irish side.
After securing qualification to the Heineken Cup for the 2011-12 season - after finishing in the play-off places at the end of the 2010-12 season - Mallinder found himself in the media spotlight as one of the leading contenders to replace Martin Johnson as England manager.
Despite being one of the favourites to replace Johnson, Mallinder revealed that following the deadline for applications on February 15, he had not submitted his CV for the role.
As a player, Mallinder won two England caps at fullback on their tour of Argentina in 1997.
