Profile

Fast winger Tom van Vollenhoven played seven Test for the Springboks and was considered one of his country's leading players when he upped ship, switched codes and signed for St Helens in 1957. The deal came a month after a tour by three league squads to try to sew the seeds of the game in South Africa. It was a massively successful move, and in ten seasons until 1967-68 he scored 392 tries in 408 appearances for the club. In 2000, he was inducted into the Rugby Football League's Hall of Fame.
