Centre Jeff Butterfield represented England and the British and Irish Lions during the 1950s. After a try-scoring debut in the 11-0 against France in the 1953 Five Nations Championship, Butterfield went on to win 28 consecutive caps for his country, captaining England in his final season in 1959.
He won the Championship five times, once completing the Grand Slam in 1957. He played his club rugby for Northampton and represented Yorkshire 54 times, captaining them to two county championships in 1953 and 1957. Butterfield went on the 1955 Lions tour to South Africa where he scored three tries in four matches. He also toured in 1959, but injury limited his participation.
Butterfield retired as England's most capped back after England's 3-3 draw with Scotland in March 1959. He died, aged 74, on April 9, 2004.
