Profile

Robinson made the leap from rugby league, where he made his name as a devastating game-breaker, into rugby union in 2000, and it didn't take him long to make an impact in his new code.

He made his England debut against Italy in the 2001 Six Nations and was subsequently selected for the British & Irish Lions tour to Australia that summer. He slotted in to the starting line-up for the first Test against the Wallabies and scored a stunning solo try, dancing past Australia fullback Chris Latham, to announce himself on the world stage.

He was no stranger to glory during his career, scoring a try in the final as England lifted the Rugby World Cup in 2003 and helping Sale to the Guinness Premiership title in 2006. During his rugby league career he had excelled for Wigan as they reigned supreme over the Super League, and represented both Great Britain and England.

Following the 2003 World Cup he briefly captained England while Jonny Wilkinson was out injured, but announced his retirement from international rugby following the 2005 Lions tour to New Zealand, where he won two further Test caps.

He was eventually coaxed out of retirement by England coach Brian Ashton ahead of the 2007 Six Nations, and his added experience helped England to the Rugby World Cup Final in 2007. His playing career ended for a second time following England loss to South Africa in the showpiece event but he returned to the field for a final time to help the Barbarians defeat South Africa at Twickenham in December 2007. He dusted off his boots for one final Twickenham farewell in September 2008 for the Help for Heroes Challenge Match.

In February 2009, Robinson accepted an invitation from Sale Sharks director of rugby Kingsley Jones to join his new-look backroom team as Head Coach but he would part company with the club after just one season.

In July 2010, he announced a shock return to playing with English National League Two North side Fylde where he once again linked up with Ashton who had been appointed the club's coaching consultant earlier the same year.

Robinson was instrumental in Fylde's promotion to National One scoring four tries in 13 appearances. In July 2011 Robinson announced his retirement from rugby. Robinson also stepped down from his coaching and club ambassador roles at the club.
