The British & Irish Lions boss Warren Gatland will go under the surgeon's knife on Friday to correct a problem with his right heel.

Gatland fractured both heels during a fall at his Waikato house last April and was forced to miss the majority of Wales' tour to Australia due to recuperation. This delayed his unveiling as Lions coach with the management board opting to wait and see if the Kiwi coach made a full recovery.

He has since been unveiled as the man who will lead the historic side to Australia in 2013 and Lions supporters and management alike will hope that his operation on Friday is purely precautionary.

"The operation to his right heel, which was broken in his much documented accident, will see Warren enter hospital on Friday," read a statement released by the Lions. "The procedure will entail treatment to an area of damaged and blistered skin. It is expected he will spend a few days in hospital after the procedure."
