Italy flanker Mauro Bergamasco made his international debut against the Netherlands in 1998, scoring two tries from No.8.
Bergamsco's father Arturo made four appearances for the Italian national team in the 1970s, and introduced Mauro and brother, Italy back Mirco, to the game whilst coaching at Italian club side Selvazzano.
A combative and fractious presence in the back-row, Bergamasco began his club career with Petrarca Padova before joining Benetton Treviso in 2000. After three seasons with Treviso Bergamasco joined French heavyweights Stade Francais.
Bergamasco played in all five of Italy's games during their first appearance as part of the Six Nations championship in 2000. He has played in two World Cups for Italy, in 2003 and 2007.
Despite his main skill-set best suiting the back-row, Bergamasco has also represented Italy on the wing during games against South Africa, Italy and Wales. And due to injuries he was selected at scrum-half for Italy's 2009 Six Nations opener against England with disastrous results.
Bergamasco missed the 2011 Six Nations Championships through injury but was named in the Italy A side for the Churchill Cup later that year. Bergamasco will seek pastures new after being discarded by Stade Francais at the end of the 2010-11 season.
