Munster forward Donnacha Ryan made his Ireland debut against Argentina at Croke Park in November 2008.
He had previously represented Ireland at U18 and U21 level after winning the Munster Schools Cup with St. Munchin's. Ryan made his Heineken Cup bow for Munster during the 2006-07 season, scoring a try.
In 2008 Ryan represented Ireland A at the Churchill Cup in Canada before turning out for Munster during their monumental 18-16 loss to the All Blacks at Thomond Park.
Since his debut, Ryan had to be content with being a bit-part player in the Ireland set-up. Having just two starts from 10 appearances, Ryan has had limited time to impress head coach Declan Kidney. However, after earning a start against Scotland and France, at lock and flanker respectively, in Ireland's warm-up Tests prior to the World Cup, Ryan was thrust into the 30-man party for the tournament in New Zealand.
