England prop Dan Cole is set to put pen to paper on a new three-year deal with Leicester Tigers.

The 24-year-old tight-head, who competes with Italian international Martin Castrogiovanni for the Tigers' No.3 shirt, has agreed terms with the Welford Road club despite reports linking him with a move that would secure more game time.

"Dan's born and bred in the city, I've coached him for eight years and I know him very well," said Leicester director of rugby Richard Cockerill. "He wants to play for this club and we have done everything possible to try and keep him. There's no point producing these guys and letting them go when they reach their prime.

"We have agreed terms - the detail is just being sorted out," said Leicester director of rugby Richard Cockerill. "Is there too much resource in one position? Maybe. Maybe not. He has played his fair share of games in front of Castro this season and vice versa. That balance works very well."

Cockerill has also expressed his concern about the new rule which, from next season, will allow one "marquee" player per squad to be excluded from the salary cap. "I think it's a very dangerous thing," said Cockerill. "You've got to be very careful sticking a large price tag on one player. It probably won't be for us."
