Hogan began his career with Munster after winning the All-Ireland league with Shannon in 2002. He made 57 appearances for Munster during his time there, and was able to win his first Ireland cap against Japan in 2005 during the British and Irish Lions tour.
Hogan made the switch to Leinster in 2006, and has made over forty appearances since joining the Magners League outfit.
