Profile

George Clancy is a relative newcomer to international rugby but the Irishman has already proven himself a competent and capable official who is likely to have a very long career at the top level.

Born in Limerick in 1977, Clancy played with St. Munchin's College, Limerick and Bruff RFC as a fullback or fly-half in his youth.

His first game as a referee was a forgettable affair: an under-15s clash between Garryowen and Richmond in October, 2000 which ended scoreless! He made his Magners League bow just over four years later before joining compatriots Alain Rolland and Alan Lewis on the International Referee Panel April, 2008 aged just 30.

Clancy began his international debut by taking charge of England's clash with Barbarians at Twickenham that June but his first proper Test was South Africa versus Italy later in the same month. His Six Nations bow arrived the following year with the meeting of France and Scotland in Paris.

However, his career has not been without controversy as the Ospreys were left enraged by Clancy's refusal to award them a penalty at the end of their Heineken Cup quarter-final defeat by Biarritz in April, 2010 after a seemingly deliberate knock-on by the French side's scrum-half, Dimitri Yachvili.

However, in spite of the acrimony which ensued, Clancy, so impressive and rapid has his development been into a top-class referee been, remains on course of officiate in the 2011 World Cup.
