Toulon No.8 Steffon Armitage has been named European Player of the Year.

Armitage scooped his fourth Heineken Cup Man of the Match award following Toulon's win over Saracens on Saturday and has capped a remarkable season with the prestigious award handed out by European Rugby Cup Ltd, the body in charge of the Heineken Cup.

Armitage finished the tournament with the most turnovers, 19, and also featured in the top 10 in the carries, tackles and defenders beaten categories. His impressive form led to Sir Clive Woodward to call for the Rugby Football Union to rethink its policy of only picking those playing overseas in 'exceptional circumstances'.

"This is a great honour, and with us winning another Heineken Cup as well, everything has come together at the right time," Armitage said. "There are a lot of big names at Toulon, but we're like one big family and without my teammates, this individual award wouldn't have been possible. Also, to follow in the footsteps of Jonny Wilkinson as a winner is really special."

Armitage saw off Jonny Wilkinson, Jacques Burger, Chris Ashton and Schalk Brits for the award.
