Scrum-half Tavis Knoyle will miss Wales' Six Nations campaign with a shoulder injury.

The young Scarlets No.9 will have an operation in the New Year and will be out of action for a minimun of three months, the Welsh Region have confirmed.

Knoyle, 21, was part of the Welsh squad that reached the semi-finals of the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. He played in Wales' 81-7 victory over Namibia in the group stages but was kept out of the match-day squad for the rest of the tournament by first-choice Mike Phillips and his understudy Lloyd Williams.

The former Neath player, who joined the Scarlets in 2009, has been restricted to two starts and three appearances off the bench for the Scarlets this season.

Wales are already without locks Luke Charteris and Alun Wyn Jones for the start of the tournament while there are also fitness concerns over centre Jamie Roberts and prop Adam Jones.
