Beaumont's England get underway

1980
Launching their first Grand Slam for 23 years, England rattled up their then highest score against Ireland, winning 24-9 at Twickenham. Clive Woodward was a new cap, entering the game on the hour as a replacement after Tony Bond broke his leg. No.8 John Scott, wing Mike Slemen and scrum-half Steve Smith scored tries for England, who were led by lock Bill Beaumont - the captain of the British & Irish Lions months later.
1952
Olympic sprinter Ken Jones twice showed England a clean pair of heels as Wales launched a successful Grand Slam campaign with a narrow 8-6 win at Twickenham. England scored tries of their own through Albert Agar and John Woodward, with the difference at full-time a conversion from Welsh centre Malcolm Thomas.
1946
The visiting New Zealand Army side lost its first tour match, beaten 11-6 by a strong Scottish XV at Murrayfield.
1963
England's 13-6 win against Wales in icy conditions was their last in Cardiff until Will Carling's men succeed on the same day 28 years later. John Owen and Malcolm Phillips scored the English tries, with Owen making his Test debut.
1974
The Five Nations Championship's double-header rotation of matches was launched with France playing Ireland in Paris and Wales facing Scotland in Cardiff.
1991
England ended their 28-year run of Cardiff misery with a convincing 25-6 win that included seven penalty goals from Simon Hodgkinson and a try to flanker Mike Teague. Neil Jenkins and Scott Gibbs made their debuts for Wales as teenagers.
1996
SANZAR announced that it will introduce a bonus point for a team scoring four tries in the forthcoming Super 12 competition.
