John Bentley played in England's first rugby international against Scotland in Edinburgh in March 1871 as well as the return match the following year. A big man, he was renowned for his speed and power, which on one occasion "enabled him to run-in, carrying
two of his opponents on his back as easily as if they were mere rag dolls".
