A versatile attacking talent capable of playing on the wing or at fullback, Rory Lamont has been capped 23 times by Scotland - he would have picked up many more caps had injuries not intervened.
Lamont was in the Northampton Saints Academy as a youth but never made a senior appearance for the first team and, after learning his trade with the Northampton Old Scouts, he headed north to Glasgow. He spent three seasons lining out for the Glasgow Hawks before being taken on by the Glasgow Warriors. Lamont scored nine tries in 21 games during the 2007/2008 season and that caught the attention of Sale Sharks, whom he joined at the end of the campaign.
Lamont racked up eight tries in 10 Premiership appearances during his first term at Edgeley Park but only managed one the following term as injuries began to take their toll. He was sidelined by a serious facial injury sustained during Scotland's Calcutta Cup victory over England in March 2008 before suffering ankle ligament damage the following year.
Despite his injury woes, Sale were keen to hold on to Lamont but in May 2009 he announced that he had signed for big-spending Toulon. He made 12 appearances for his new side, scoring once, before his injury jinx struck again, Lamont suffering knee ligament damage in Scotland's dramatic 31-24 defeat by Wales in Cardiff in February, thus bringing a premature end to his season.
He has known plenty of misfortune at international level but he did mark his debut, which came against Wales in the 2005 Six Nations, with a try and he was also one of Scotland's star performers in the 2007 World Cup, ending the tournament with four tries to his name.
He was a fringe player at the 2011 World Cup, making just one appearance against Georgia, and following the tournament he re-signed with Glasgow Warriors following a warning from Scotland coach Andy Robinson that his lack of game time with Toulon could jeopardise his international future.
