Profile

Prop Nicolas Mas has given his club Perpignan long service in the front row since joining from ES Catalane in 1999, and has made more than 50 appearances in European competition since his first against Rotherham in the Shield in October 2000.

Mas played an important part in Perpignan's famous run to the 2003 Heineken Cup final, which they lost to Toulouse in Dublin. He was the starting tighthead in the quarter-final win away to Llanelli, and the loosehead for the semi-final win against Leinster at Lansdowne Road.

He made his Test debut for France on tour in New Zealand in June 2003, and was called up for the 2007 Rugby World Cup when Sylvain Marconnet of Stade Français pulled out a month before the competition. Marconnet had not recovered sufficiently from the ankle injury he suffered skiing with his daughter the previous March.

Mas won his 20th cap as a replacement against Argentina in November 2008.

He started the subsequent internationals against the Pacific Islanders and Australia in the No.3 jersey to suggest coach Marc Lièvremont still values his tough scrummaging in the national set-up.

Since the 2008 internationals, Mas has established himself as France's number one tight-head and started all five of France's games during the 2011 Six Nations. At the 2011 World Cup Mas started five of their matches including the World Cup final against New Zealand.
