Profile

Davy Tweed was a controversial Irish international lock, whose powerful unionist politics led to him being a divisive presence for fans.

He won his first Irish cap in 1995 at the age of 35, turning out against France in the Five Nations. He won three further caps for Ireland that year, including one against Japan at the 1995 Rugby World Cup. Tweed was quoted however as saying that he "played 30 times for my country [Ulster] and once for Ireland".

Following his retirement from playing Tweed was elected on to Ballymena Council under the DUP banner, but in 2007 he was re-elected as an independent after objecting to a power-sharing scheme between the DUP and Sinn Fein.
