Profile

Steele served as chief executive of the Rugby Football Union during a turbulent few months between September 2010 and June 2011.

A former army officer, he was a notable fly-half for Northampton and England 'A' before going on to become director of rugby at London Scottish. He returned to Franklin's Gardens in 1999 as the Saints' director of rugby and steered the club to a famous Heineken Cup triumph in 2000.

In 2002, he took on the role of executive director at the English Premiership club before becoming chief executive of UK sport in 2005. He was appointed as the new chief executive of the RFU in 2010, succeeding Francis Baron, and immediately conducted a comprehensive review of the organisation.

The results of that review led to widespread changes to the governing body's structure, including the scrapping of Rob Andrew's director of elite rugby role and the creation of a new elite performance director position.

But Steele parted company with the RFU just nine months into his tenure in the wake of their botched attempts to attract a performance director that saw the job description repeatedly changed and leading candidate Sir Clive Woodward walk away from the process.
