Basson made his Test debut for the Springboks off the bench against Wales in Cardiff in June 2010, having previously represented the Emerging Springboks. Later in the year he broke the record for most tries in a Currie Cup season and won Player of the Year despite a mixed performance by his Griquas side - eventually agreeing a deal with the Blue Bulls.
His form won him a recall to the Boks squad for their November tour but after starting their first two Tests, wins over Ireland and Wales, he was sent home, along with hooker Chiliboy Ralepelle, for testing positive for a banned substance. Both players were immediately suspended from all rugby pending further investigation, but later cleared of any wrongdoing.
