Brian O'Driscoll has slammed the standard of refereeing in the Magners League prior to Leinster's semi-final meeting with Munster at the RDS next weekend.

The Ireland skipper was left incensed by the performance of referee Peter Fitzgibbon and his team in Leinster's 37-28 win over Edinburgh on Sunday and believes that until the standard of officiating rises the league will always be in the shadow of the Heineken Cup.

"At times it has been incredibly frustrating," he told RTE. "With some of the decisions, players are looking at each other and not understanding interpretations. We need to make sure that is put right if this league is to go forward.

"When you have that level of inconsistency you are going to see frustrated players and you are not going to get good, free flowing rugby. Until that standard is of a certain level - of Heineken Cup level - you are limiting how good the league can actually become."

O'Driscoll thinks that top officials must be drafted in for the weekend's play-off stage, which also sees the Ospreys take on Glasgow at the Liberty Stadium.

"You have got to have the best referees for the biggest games," he said. "Certainly when you get to knockout stages, you should be looking at getting the likes of Wayne Barnes, Chris White and Nigel Owens. They are the best referees and they have proven it time and time again. Even if you have to delve down into the southern hemisphere for some of those referees, so be it."
