The finals of the Tonga's Tongatapu Secondary School Rugby Tournament were postponed after a night of student violence ended with 147 arrests and two boys in hospital.
The authorities postponed the finals on police advice after they said there was a real fear of a renewal of the unrest. The matches will still take place but the exact arrangements have yet to be decided.
Acting deputy police commissioner Soakai Motu'apuaka said: "The two injured boys are reported to be in a stable condition but we have in police custody at the Nuku'alofa Central Police station 147 students from Tupou College whom we are interrogating today. We had to pull out our policemen from the Mu'a and Nukunuku Police stations to help deal with the matter."
