Winger McLean played 13 times for the Wallabies between 1971-74 scoring two tries. His final international outing against the All Blacks in 1974 was also the international debut of his younger brother Paul.

He is part of the famous McLean clan that includes his grandfather Doug Snr and uncle Doug Jnr who represented Australia in both rugby codes. His uncle Bill captained the Wallabies in the wake of World War II and whose son Peter also played for his country. Another uncle Jack toured with the Wallabies in 1946 but did not earn a Test cap.
