Profile

Arthur Guillemard made his England debut against Scotland in the first-ever international match at Raeburn Place on March 27, 1871, winning his only other cap in the return match the following year. Captain of Rugby School, he went on to be one of the early leading figures at Blackheath and the RFU, serving as the latter's secretary between 1872 and 1878 and president from 1879. It was as president of the RFU that he accepted the gift of the Calcutta Cup from the Calcutta Football Club and it was decided that it would be contested annually by England and Scotland. He was also a well respected commentator on the game and contributed to various publications including Football: The Rugby Union Game that charted the early development of the sport from its origins in 1871. He also played for Forest Football Club (later known as Wanderers Football Club) who were one of the founder members of the Football Association in 1863, and was well known in the world of cricket where he was one of the founders of the Butterflies, although it was said that poor eyesight limited his participation.
