Paul Doran-Jones is set to complete a remarkable rise to international level with a place on the England bench to face Argentina at Twickenham on Saturday.
The prop, who can cover both sides of the scrum, is set to profit from England's lengthening injury list despite his lack of experience at Guinness Premiership level with Gloucester. Injury may rule Bath's David Wilson out of Saturday's showdown, opening the door to Doran-Jones as Phil Vickery, Julian White, Jason Hobson and Andrew Sheridan remain on the injured list.
Another worry for Martin Johnson is Bath veteran David Barnes, who has struggled with a knee injury at training. Both Barnes and Wilson have been released back to Bath for further assessment, and have been joined by eight other squad members. Among them is Leicester No.8 Jordan Crane, who started against Australia last weekend.
Scrum coach Graham Rowntree is confident in the ability of former London Welsh regular Doran-Jones to step up and he will not have it easy against an Argetnina side that features a bulldozing pack and front-row.
"The other coaches didn't know what he looked like until Sunday night but I have been watching Paul all season," said Rowntree. "He can play both sides of the scrum and I think he is a true prospect for the future.
"We could be playing against easier scrums this weekend for sure, it is the deep end. Paul is the next guy in and we get on with it. It is a big step up but Paul is good enough and that is what we will be telling him.
"We have watched his games. There are plenty of good players who have come through and stepped up and I back him to do it. He has got a great attitude, he is keen and he has impressed all the other coaches. We will find out about players like Doran-Jones and Courtney Lawes."
Players released: David Barnes (Bath), David Wilson (Bath), Steffon Armitage (London Irish), George Chuter (Leicester Tigers), Jordan Crane (Leicester Tigers), Ben Foden (Northampton Saints), Ben Kay (Leicester Tigers), David Strettle (Harlequins), Mathew Tait (Sale Sharks), Richard Wigglesworth (Sale Sharks)
