'Tongan Thor' Taniela Tupou bags another hat-trick
May 19, 2014
Taniela Tupou, the Tongan-born Auckland schoolboy who has become an internet sensation, rumbled over for another hat-trick of tries at the weekend.
Tupou, 18, made headlines around the world after video of his three tries for Sacred Heart College against Kelston Boys High School hit the web, the 135kg prop showing rare speed and skills for a player of his size. The clip has now passed 1 million views on YouTube.
And he followed up with another treble as Sacred Heart defeated Mt Albert Grammar 22-3 on Saturday.
Tupou, dubbed the "Tongan Thor" by his schoolmates, remains off-limits to reporters but his Sydney-based manager, Daniel O'Loughlin, says the player is overwhelmed by his overnight fame.
"And I would like everyone to really think about the fact that he's 18," O'Loughlin told Fairfax Media. "You imagine what they would be [like], if everyone knows your name in an instant. He is just overwhelmed, but hopefully he has got good support at the school and with us, who can protect him as much as we can."
