Profile

Mike Titcomb was one of the leading northern hemisphere referees in the 1960s and 70s. In 1966, aged 32, he became England's youngest international official, and he stood in eight Tests in his ten years on the RFU panel. He was referee in a highly controversial match in 1968 when he awarded a drop goal to Gareth Edwards even though most people thought the ball had gone wide. There was a long delay as the irate Dublin crowd bombarded the pitch with missiles. "It was just one of those things that could have happened to anyone," Titcomb, who acknowledged his error, later said. "I thought the ball had gone over." He was a teacher by profession.
