Benji Marshall made a high-profile switch from rugby league to union with the Auckland-based Blues in 2013.
The New Zealand-born Marshall was one of rugby league's biggest stars with his outstanding playmaking ability, that incorporated excellent passing, pace and a famous sidestep, having lit up Australia's National Rugby League competition throughout an 11-year career with Wests Tigers that began with his debut as an 18-year-old in 2003 and reached a peak with the title in 2005.
His undoubted talents also earned him international recognition with the New Zealand Kiwis with whom he won the 2008 Rugby League World Cup and he captained his country between 2009 and 2012. He was also awarded the Golden Boot as the best player in the game in 2010.
In July 2013, Marshall sought a release from the remaining two years of his contract with Wests Tigers in order to pursue a career in rugby union and his wish was reluctantly granted after talks over a new deal broke down.
He later entered into negotiations with the Blues and a deal was soon agreed with the player understood to have accepted a significant pay cut in order to pursue his dream of playing for the All Blacks.
