Richardt Strauss is a South African-born hooker who was called up to the Ireland squad in October 2012 after qualifying on residency grounds.
Strauss attended the prestigious rugby school Grey College in Bloemfontein and soon experienced success on the international stage with the South African U19 side at the JWC in 2005. He was turning out for the Free State Cheetahs before securing a move to the Super Rugby franchise for the 2007 season. He stayed there until 2009 when he opted to move to Leinster.
He started at Leinster in a bit-part role before playing a key role in their 2011 Heineken Cup triumph over Northampton Saints. His influence continued to grow for the Irish province and was again a central player as Leinster defended their European crown a year later. Having qualified to represent Ireland through residency, Strauss was called up for Ireland's autumn internationals in October 2012.
