Bob Deans played only five times for New Zealand and died of peritonitis aged 24, but he entered rugby folklore in December 1905 when he appeared to score a crucial try only for it to be disallowed by the referee who ruled he had come up short. It was the only defeat on the All Blacks' 35-match tour, and on his death bed three years later he remained adamant: "'I did score that try in Cardiff".
